Chapter 1 桐壺 Kiritsubo

During the Heian period of Japan, there was a lady named Kiritsubo, who was loved by the Emperor even over other, higher-ranking women. The other ladies of the imperial court resented that they had been supplanted by Kiritsubo in the Emperor's heart, and retaliated by mistreating her.
Kiritsubo gave birth to a son of extrordinary beauty, and the Emperor seemed to love this new son more than his firstborn son. The Kokiden Consort, mother of the elder son, came to resent Kiritsubo even more. Such was the tension between the two women that Kiritsubo's health deteriorated and she eventually died.
The Emperor was devastated by her death. He found some consolation when he learned of another woman, called Fujitsubo, who looked much like his love. He made her his new wife. The Emperor took further consolation in his new son. The Emperor secretly wished to make him his crown prince, but he knew this could not be, as the boy lacked other supporters within the imperial court. A visiting physiognomist, on seeing the boy but not knowing his parentage, said that he had the looks of a future Emperor, but that also that his reign would be unhappy. The Emperor wished to safeguard his new son's happiness, and so he named his elder son Crown Prince instead.
When the younger son was 12, he received the name of "Genji" as part of his coming-of-age initiation rites. Genji was betrothed to Aoi, the daughter of the Minister of the Left. Genji's heart, however, leaned more towards Fujitsubo.
