Kyoto City University of Arts (京都市立芸術大学 Kyoto siritu geijutsu daigaku?) is a municipal university of general art and music art in Kyoto, Japan, established in 1880.
The university has the longest histories as a university of art in Japan. And in Tokyo , Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music was established in 1885.

In 1880, the founder Sanjo Sanetomi gave the university the name "Nihon Saisho Kyoto Ga Gakkou (日本最初京都画学校 Kyoto Art School , The first establishment in Japan "?)
Kyoto City had lost its status as a capital in 1867 at the beginning of Meiji Period.We had excellent painters or pottery artists in Kansai region,( Kyoto ,Osaka ,Shiga and so forth).
The Bunmei Kaika (文明 開化 the occidentalization of Japanese culture in earlier meiji era?) had brought Japan the militarism and the abandoning of conventional art culture in Kyoto , former the capital of Japan.
Some learned citizens had their co-working to establish their training institution for Japanese traditional art. Thus the university has its origins.
