KXSP 590 AM is a radio station located in Omaha, Nebraska. It currently broadcasts as Big Sports 590AM, an all-sports talk station. The station is owned by Journal Broadcast Group.

[edit] History

The station was established in 1923 by the Woodmen of the World life insurance society as WOAW, after failing to obtain the WOW call letters (for Woodmen Of the World) because they were used by the steamship Henry J. Bibble. In 1926, upon retirement of the Bibble, the station adopted the call letters WOW. The Woodmen society put the station up for sale in 1945 out of fear that it would jeopardize its tax-exempt status; it eventually leased the station to another company. In 1958, Meredith Corporation, owner of Omaha's WOW-TV (now WOWT-TV), purchased WOW. It became a Top 40 station in the early 1970s and a country station in the early 1980s. Meredith sold the station in 1983, and Journal Broadcast Group bought it in 1999. In November 1999, the WOW call letters were dropped in favor of KOMJ with adoption of a new format of adult standards. When the station switched to a sports format in 2005, the call letters were changed again to KXSP.
