[edit] Founding and naming
At the beginning of 2005 Dutch dj Rob Stenders, together with Ties Roodhardt and Kees-Jan Schoots, starts his own radiostation named, KXradio. It broadcasts via internet and is characterized by lack of a playlist or format.
Every dj is invited to play his or her own musical tastes, a singular rule that culminates in its slogan "For the Love of Music", in part also an ode to late Dutch dj Alfred Lagarde.
Reasons for starting their own radio station, Rob states: "As a listener I was sick of all those broadcasting stations with their neat playlists. The utter predictability is understandable though. A broadcasting frequency is expensive and return on investment is paramount, not the music. It has become a means to earn money and nothing more. DJs simply follow a playlist and if done properly, their table is set. I was missing a broadcasting station in this acoustic landscape where DJs can still play what they like, where you can never predict what record'll come next. In short: a station for the love of music."
Its name is conceived by co-founder Ties Roodhardt and does not mean anything. It started broadcasting in May 2005.
[edit] Employees
All broadcasting contributions are made on a voluntary basis.
KXradio's dj base ranges from nationwide well known and professional dj's such as Jeroen van Inkel, Henk Westbroek and Mark van den Akker, to old acquintances and friends of Rob Stenders. All live broadcasts are characterized by a high level of interactivity with the audience by means of a forum and a chatbox. Some program's comprise more than half of the airtime with listener's suggestions.
Listeners can make their own show as part of the NoVip concept, thereby contributing to the station's broadcasts. KXradio is characterized by a fervent base of followers, calling themselves the 'club van nikX', who contribute in all the station's endeavours on and off the air.
[edit] Structure
KXradio broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Daytime and evening shows consist of live programs or pre-made programs that are sent to the studio and scheduled to air. The nighttime is filled with reruns, pre-made programs and random selections from a musical database. In the weekends the NoVip's are also aired.
The only structural elements in all shows are jingles and since February 2007 hourly news broadcasts in collaboration with Dutch news agency ANP.
Noteworthy is the station's own hit list called Verleidelijke14, a list of 14 newly released songs ordered by a voting system that involves only the audience. Each week dj's Rob Stenders and Gerard Ekdom choose a newly released song and give it extra playtime, called the Freakandel Speciaal, named after a Dutch snack with curry, onions and mayonnaise.
[edit] Reception and accommodation
KXradio's broadcasts are available as podcast and can be received by mobile telephone. As of 2 February 2007 the station moved from an attic to the more professional main building of media production company EyeWorks, guaranteeing cable reception throughout Holland.
