[edit] Timeline of Port Arthur/Dalian region

For use in possible future cleanup of this article, here's a timeline of this region from 1882 to 1905.

  • 1882: China establishes naval base at Lüshunkou (Port Arthur).
  • 1880s: small town develops on southern shore of Dalian Bay at site of future Dalian.
  • 1894: Japan occupies region during First Sino-Japanese War.
  • 1895 April: Treaty of Shimonoseki awards full sovereignty of region to Japan. Triple Intervention makes Japan give it back to China.
  • 1897 December: Russia sends naval vessels into Port Arthur harbor.
  • 1898 March: Russia formally leases region from China.
  • 1898 June: Russia gets formal permission from China to build the southern line of the Chinese Eastern Railway (CER) connecting the region to Harbin.
  • 1899: Russia founds Dal'niy (now Dalian).
  • 1905: Russia cedes its lease of the region to Japan in Treaty of Portsmouth. Treaty awards to Japan the southern line of the CER up to Changchun.
