[edit] Summary

The main shrine at the end of the southern saungdan (covered approach), Kuthodaw Pagoda, Mandalay, Myanmar. The Buddha is surrounded by smaller images including the monks Shin Thiwali (standing figure holding a palm leaf fan behind the small Buddha on the left) and Shin Thariputtra (very small kneeling figure on the right with back to camera and next to the right knee of the small Buddha). Traditional offerings include pan (flowers), yeigyan (cool water), si-mee (oil lamps), and ngapyaw pwè oun pwè (bananas and coconut). Shown here are jasmine and champac chains, hti (miniature umbrellas), dagun koukka (paper pennants and streamers), four-coloured sasana flags, and water in small silver bowls on a tall silver tray (second tier right). Green bananas in bunches and a green coconut with its stalk intact are normally required.
