Kurt Steyrer (b. June 3, 1920 Linz - died July 16, 2007 Vienna) was an Austrian politician, health minister and Socialist presidential candidate.[1]
Steyrer was born on June 3, 1920 in the city of Linz.[1] Steyrer studied medicine in the cities of Vienna and Prague before opening up his own practice in dermatology.[1] His medical background allowed him to serve as the health and environment minister of Austria. [1]
Steyrer was one of the leaders of the Social Democratic Party of Austria.[1]
Steyrer unsuccessfully ran as the SPO candidate for president of Austria in 1986 against former U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim.[1] Steyrer was defeated in the election by Waldheim.
Steyrer died in Vienna, Austria, on July 16, 2007, after a brief illness.[1] His death was initially reported by the Austria Press Agency and the ORF. Coincidentally, Kurt Waldheim, Steyrer's 1986 presidentially opponent, died less a month before Steyrer in June 2007.[1]
