[edit] Early life

Kurt Halsey Frederiksen was born in Racine, Wisconsin. [1]

He grew up an aspiring newspaper cartoonist, and later switched to painting in college.

"Influenced by my hopeless romantic and super sensitive mindset, I pay far too much attention to the little things in life and in the relationship between two people. In constant need of reassurance, explanation, closure, and attention, my paintings are made." - Kurt Halsey.

[edit] Education and art

After spending a single semester at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in the Fall of 1996, Halsey transferred to and graduated with a BFA in Painting from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2000. His art focuses heavily on the sensitive emotions of relationships. As a result, his work has generated a considerable following online, particularly on sites such as LiveJournal and MySpace where his drawings can often be seen incorporated into animated GIFs and instant messenger buddy icons, though Kurt has said repeatedly that he does not like seeing his art manipulated with fill in color and text added as fan art.[citation needed] His work can occasionally be spotted tattooed onto the arms of his fans. Aaron Gillespie of Underoath/The Almost stated that he is a huge fan of Halsey's work.[citation needed] xkcd artist Randall Munroe is also a big fan[2], and echoes Halsey's sentiments in his more intimate works.

Halsey's art has been featured at exhibitions in Philadelphia, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jose, Portland, Chicago, Minneapolis, Detroit, Toronto, Milwaukee, Cleveland, and Baltimore and sold at affordable rates for his fans at Urban Outfitters . He currently resides in Portland, Oregon with his two cats Swift Scout 4 and Devo. His work has recently been featured in a limited edition embroidery pattern from Sublime Stitching.
