Kuppam taliparamba

Kuppam is a small village situated in the Kannur district of Kerala state, South India.
Image:Kuppambridge The village is divided into two parts, south and north. South Kuppam is a part of Taliparamba municipality. North Kuppam, or also called ‘Mukkunnu’, is a part of Pariyaram Village Panchayath.
During 1960s and 70s this village was a famous commercial center of spices. The national highway 17 is passing through this village. Contents [hide]

Like most other places of Kerala, Kuppam is situated in the valley of ‘Sahya Mountain’. Kuppam is about 25 km east from Arabian Sea.

Kuppam river is one of the famous rivers of Kerala, which originates from the hilly area of western Kanrnataka. It flows into the Arabian Sea. The place got its name from Kuppam River. The meaning of the word is almost anonymous. Once, Kuppam River was the only was to travel into the hilly areas of Kannur district. But after the construction of Kuppam Bridge, passenger boats almost disappeared.

Kuppam Bridge was built in 1970 with British construction methods, which consists of 5 huge arches each side. The bridge is attractive for its construction style.

There are two places with name Kuppam in India. One is as described above in Andraparadesh by you. The second Kuppam mentioned under the article Taliparamba, Kannur District Kerala is different. It is a small town near Taliparamba on the banks of Kuppam River. Kuppam river which is about 74 km long, flows from the western ghats to Arabian Sea touching the villages like Kooveri, Mukkunnu and Kuttiyeri. Kuppam was a very busy trading centre for those people from upstream of Kuppam river who used to bring their agricultural products, via motor boats and also an important ferrying point for people coming via boats to catch bus and go to places like taliparamba & Kannur, as these areas were not coonected by bus in the 70s & 80s. Kuppam is hardly 2 to 3 km from Taliparamba with a sizable Muslim population with a Muslim Mosque, Primary School, Post Office (Pin Code 670144). The surrounding villages are Hindu dominated with picturesque hills and many Theyyam temples. Kuppam river is one of the most nonpolluted rivers with virgin beauty, abundant in fish, crabs and other blessed with rich flaura & fauna. The area is culturally & politically very vibrant. Sizable population of young people are migrated to Persian Gulf in search of green pastures.
