The main concept of the Kuala Lumpur Education City (KLEC) is to combine the elements of a learning community, healthy living, and leisure in an environmentally-friendly and cultured environment. This is done by co-locating international universities, local institutions of higher learning, secondary and primary teaching and learning facilities together with commercial and residential areas in a smart city development. Here, the universities, colleges and schools contribute to the social, economic and cultural life of the city and its community.
KLEC will be planned as an international educational hub, in line with the government’s policy to make Malaysia a regional center of excellence in education, by maintaining a proportionate mix of international, regional and local institutions and students. Due to its proximity to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) which is the international gateway for Malaysia, as well as to Putrajaya, the administrative capital of the country, and Cyberjaya, the information technology city, KLEC is well positioned as a Global Education Hub in Malaysia.
The vision of KLEC, planned as a global education hub that fosters international unity and learning through Education, Culture and Lifestyle as the core of a modern 21st Century City, outlines the strategic intention of bringing top universities and institutions of higher learning, local and international, to offer world-class programmes in line with the government’s goal of establishing and promoting Malaysia as a regional hub for international education. The unique shared service model that is the cornerstone of the Kuala Lumpur Education City provides not only the student and faculty community, a mix of locals and internationals, a unique teaching and learning environment that empowers the seeking and sharing of knowledge, but also a competitive and flexible business and academic framework for shared educational and support services as well as world-class infrastructure facilities to the institutions located in the Academic Park of the city.
With the expected completion of phase I of the KLEC in 2011, it is expected that the academic population to continue to grow to about 110,000 by the year 2020. The core of the city, the Academic Park is expected to cover more than 40% of the proposed allocation of land, where the main academic and shares service buildings and facilities will be located. Other than the Academic Park that has been planned, the KLEC also offers residential communities to both support the academic population but also to cater for the general public who wishes to be part of the KLEC community.
Kuala Lumpur Education City is planned as an international education hub that caters to the Asia Pacific region as well as the Middle East and Central Asia markets, and will be able to showcase Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia as a global destination for world-class educational opportunities and experience.
