[edit] History
The station first started out as KDSQ in 1967 in the Sherman-Denison area on frequency 101.7 FM. Two years later, it changed its callsign to KSHN. Up until 1975, the format was unknown, then the call letters changed to KIKM-FM with a Country format during the day and Top 40 at night (simulcasted from sister station KIKM-AM), then to full time Top 40 a couple years later. In 1983, the callsign has changed to KZXL, but 2 years later the previous callsign was re-established...this time with a 24-hour Country format known as Kick'm Country.
A decade later, KIKM swapped frequencies with KDVE (also in Sherman), however the station went dark in 1997. During that time, the city of license was changed from Sherman to its current location in Flower Mound.
A couple months later, the KNKI call letters were established, but they did not sign on until over a year later. After the first weeks of broadcasting as Memories 96.7 FM it evolved to KMEO, playing Oldies and Easy listening music from the 1950s to the 1970s, much like its competitor station KLUV. During the overnight hours, KMEO would switch to a live "Memories" programming from ABC Radio. It has enjoyed the loyal following until June 27, 2003 when the "Memories" format was dropped. Previously live, local programming was briefly replaced by ABC Radio's corporate "Memories" satellite programming for a full 24 hours on June 26, 2003. The KMEO callsign has been reassigned in the San Angelo area.
Thus 96.7 The Twister was "born" a month later with a returning music line-up consisting of mostly modern country music that is broadcast in "20-in-a-row" segments. KTYS is managed locally at 2221 East Lamar Blvd., Suite 300 - Arlington, Texas 76006. The Twister touched down in the summer of 2003 with 20,000 songs in a row without commercial interruption. The station's motto is "The Most New Country In Texas".
The air staff includes Crash Poteet, Jeremy Robinson, Allan Peck, Lorri Leigh and Hondo.
In 2005 Jeremy Robinson signed on with ABC radio to do nights with The Texas Twister. The prior 6 years he was with the Wolf (KPLX)
[edit] Format Change
Since May 2008, there have been rumors that KTYS will be changing formats according to radio-info.com and the official station website and as of June 6, the rumors have been confirmed[1]. It was also confirmed that Allan Peck did his last radio show on May 23, 2008[2]. Several Dallas-area reporters say that KTYS will be returning to a syndicated satellite feed from ABC Radio Networks, however there is also speculation that major talent signing is in the works. It would be the first radio format flip in less than 5 years since its switch from the "Memories" playlist in 2003. The predicted date for the change was June 9, but as of now; it has not happened yet.
Sister Stations: 96.3 KSCS-FM - WBAP-AM News/Talk 820.
