Engla Matilda Juncosa Höglund (March 5, 1998April 5, 2008) was a Swedish girl who was abducted while riding her bike home from a soccer practice and found murdered eight days later. Her disappearance on April 5, 2008, resulting in nationwide and international media attention, hundreds of volunteers searching the woods around Stjärnsund, and the capture of Anders Eklund.

[edit] Disappearance

Soon after 11 am on Saturday April 5, 2008, Engla was dropped off at the football field in Stjärnsund by her mother Carina. Engla and her friends play at the field for a few hours and then goes to a kiosk nearby to buy ice cream at approximately 13.30 pm. At 14.00 pm Engla speaks with her mother on her mobile phone and informs her that she and her friends will leave the kiosk and ride their bikes home. Engla is elated since it will be her first time ever to ride her bike home by herself. Engla and her mother speak on the phone again just ten minutes later. At 14.16.11 a man who has bought a brand new camera and enthusiastically photographs everything in his path takes a picture with Engla riding her bike in it. 55 seconds later at 14.17.06 the same man takes a photograph of a red SAAB traveling in the same direction. At 14.20 Engla's mother calls Engle and Engle tell her mother that she is at Rödnäs udde (Rödnäs peninsula), approximately ten minutes from her home and is now alone. At approximately 14.45 after having trying to reach Engla a few times on her mobile phone and starting to get worried, Engla's mother go out and search for her daughter. At 16.25 Engla's mother discovers Engla's bicycle hidden a few meters in to the wood of the road, just 500 meters from the family's home. She calls the police at 16.34, a massive search and rescue operations starts since the police immediately suspect the Engla has been abducted. Engla's mobile phone is still turned on and is sending signals to a mast in the area.

Search and rescue operations continues, Police, various emergency service organizations, Swedish Home Guard, and more then 200 volunteers continued searching the woods close the the home. A helicopter with an infrared camera arrived from Stockholm to assist in the search. Crime scene investigators secure tire tracks on the gravel road, close to where the bike was found. The police issue a nation wide "Rikslarm" for Engla, Anders Eklund, and Eklund's red SAAB. During the evening the mobile phone signal dies.

Search continues in the woods around Stjärnsund and Engla's mother plead to the public to help with the search for her daughter. During the afternoon the police receive information about Anders Eklund's whereabouts and occupation ; He is a truck driver and he is traveling south on European route E6 in his truck. During the evening he is arrested at a truck stop on top of the Hallandsås in south western Sweden. Later his red SAAB is confiscated in his garage in Torsåker.

Anders Eklund is brought to custody in Borlänge, where he pleads not guilty during interrogations. The police search Eklund's home and confiscates his computer. At 21.00 police and emergency service organizations terminate the search since it is believed that Engla is no longer in the area around Stjärnsund. Dalarna county police department get assistance from Rikskriminalen.

Volunteers continue searching the area. The police examine a hunting lodge in Bäckebo which Eklund's family previously owned. During interrogations Eklund admits that he traveled through Stjärnsund on the same day Engla disappeared. He stated that he was traveling home to Torsåker from Hedemora, but continue to claim that he is innocent.

Anders Eklund is arrested (*Remand) on reasonable suspicion for the abduction of Engla. His previous statement about driving through Stjärnsund without stopping his car is disclosed after a witness testifies against it. Eklund's is also charged on probable cause for possession of child pornography on his computer. A motorhome in Storsäng with connections to Eklund is searched by the police. 50 volunteers led by Anna Eling, a close friend to Engla's family, continue searching for Engla in the woods around Stjärnsund.
