Krk is the main settlement of the island of Krk. It located on the southwest coast of the island and is seat of the Catholic Diocese of Krk. The city is ancient and among the oldest in the Adriatic. It is continiously inhabited since the Roman times and was once part of the byzantian Theme Dalmatia when western empire has falled to the barbarians. Roman ruins can be seen today in some parts of the town, for ex. mosaics in the houses. The city had also preserved many of medieval fortifications including Frankopanski kaštel close to the Komplin park, and part of the city walls. The city was once known for his unique romance language called vegliotic which was spoken till the early 19-th century.
