Krishnapatnam is located at 14.2833° N 80.1167° E.[1] It has an average elevation of 3 meters (13 feet).

Krishnapatnam is a major port and market center. It is situated at a distance of 24 km from Nellore City in Nellore District, the southernmost coastal district in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India.

Krishnapatnam port is hoped to become a world class deep water port. Iron ore and granite is being exported from this port by lighterage operations (using barges) to other countries like China.

Ships come to this port regularly from various places around the world. The first phase of work on this port will be over by the end of 2008. The first phase will compose of 3 berths (for coal, iron ore and general cargo) and creation of the harbor by construction of 2 breakwaters and dredging.

The port is currently being connected with the national highway and railway grid and further for transport of Iron ore from Bellary - Hospet region

There is an 4000 MW UMPP (Ultra Mega Power Plants(India)) Planned here. Imported coal would be used. This project is one of the 9 UMPP's that have been envisaged by the Power Finance corporation to have "Power for all by 2012. APGENCO also proposes to set up a 1600 MW plant at Krishnapatnam. The port will expand in phase 2 with the construction of 4 more berths and additional dredging to cater for this coal cargo.

Phase 3 expansion will cater to a container terminal.
