The college imparts (undergraduate) education in 5 streams of engineering:
Department | Intake | Branch Code |
---|---|---|
Electrical and Electronics Engineering | 120 Seats | EN(021) |
Computer Science and Engineering | 120 Seats | CS(010) |
Electronics and Communication Engineering | 120 Seats | EC(031) |
Information Technology | 120 Seats | IT(013) |
Mechanical Engineering | 120 Seats | ME (040) |
Total | 600 Seats |
All these have been accredited by the NBA[1]
Starting from the 2007-08 session the seat intake in the Information Technology stream has been increased to 120 seats.
Now all the branches of engineering have been accredited by the NBA Masters Programme
- Masters in Computer Applications (MCA) 120 Seats
- Masters in Business Administration (MBA) 120 Seats
Others B. Pharma 60 Seats
These streams make up the main departments at the institute. Besides these the maths department is also quiet large by the number of faculty members.
[edit] Fee
The fee for the students entering the college in the academic year 2007-08 and afterwards has been increased to Rs.60,000 (tuition fee) and about Rs.1,10,000 (hostel+mess inclusive). Students admitted before the mentioned year pay the same amount as at the time of admission (Rs. 44,000 tution and about Rs.80,000 colege+hostel+mess)
Fees Rs. 60,000/- (subject to change by Hon'ble Court/Fee Committee.) The fees of 2003-2007 Batch is still in dispute.
[edit] The departments
[edit] Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department
The department is catering to the needs of the industry by training its students in its several well-equipped spacious laboratories to become valuable engineers.
The department has recently been expanded the student intake from 60 to 120. The college has reapplied for the National Board of Accreditation Accreditation. This department is perhaps the most hated of all the departments for the vastness of the course. Until now no national level core-branch company has visited the campus.
[edit] Electronics & Communications Engineering Department
Electronics and Communications Department provides undergraduate level courses in the two crucial fields. The objective of the Department is to prepare students with a good foundation so that they graduate to becoming effective systems engineers. The results in the university examinations have been excellent throughout. The department has well-equipped labs for the following. No or insignificant number of core-branch companies have come to the institute.
[edit] Computer Science and Engineering Department
The Computer Science & Engg caters the cental computing fascilities. The department has more ambitious projects in the pipeline in the years to come.
[edit] Information Technology Department
Earlier a part of Computer Science & Engg Department, recently the Information Technology Department nowruns independently. With all the state-of-the-art facilities, department encourages students to take up projects.
Various IT companies pick recruits the students in their pre-final year.
[edit] Mechanical Engineering Department
The Mechanical Engineering Department is one of the key strengths of the Institute. By far this is the most successful of all the departments with largest number of "core-branch" placements.
[edit] Classes
The classes generally consists of batches of 50-60 students during the lecture classes and about 30 students in the tutorial classes. The lecture classes are generally interactive and the students may raise questions directly there on the topic of discussion. During the lecture classes, the teacher (most of the times the same as the one giving the lecture) distributes a problem sheet comprising of selected previous years UPTU questions which the students are required to solve and submit. This carries marks in the Internal Assessment portion.
[edit] Examination & Assessment
The examination of student is done both internally at the college and externally by the UPTU each of which have equal weightage.
There are 10 subjects each semester carrying overall 1000 marks. There are 5 "main" subjects each of which has a 100 marks external theory paper and 50 marks are awarded by the subject teacher internally. The internal assessment consists of two sessional tests of 15 marks each and the remaining 20 marks are awarded on the basis of attendance and homework assignments.
Besides, there are 4 practical and laboratories of 50 marks each semester which may or may not be related to the subjects being studied. The remaining 50 marks are for general proficiency.
Average students get generally about 60% marks in the external assessment and about 80% marks in the internal evaluation.
[edit] Student and College life
All those students who study at kiet are called kietian.
Approximately half of the students reside in hostels within the campus and the other half either live in rooms on rent nearby or come from adjoining cities of Ghaziabad, Noida or Meerut. Students are admitted through SEE-UPTU which takes only UP domicile students. Of all the students, Lucknow and Kanpur students have the greatest share. Varanasi students are present in significant number.
[edit] Fests & Other Co-curricular activities
A Tech-Fest was organised by Cyborg,a society run by Computer Sc Deptt in Oct'2005
It was followed by series of activities by various societies that run in the college of electronics deptt, Mechanical depptt, IT deptt and MCA Students.
A full-fledged technical festival was held this academic year March 12-18(2007-08)
[edit] Sports
The small college playground hosts 24 hours cricket matches throughout the year. The ground is well lit-up and has a good volley ball and lawn-tennis courts. Table tennis is the favourite amongst hostellers.
Several intra-college tournaments have taken place.
Students have also participated in inter-college tounaments and have won as well.
[edit] Criticism
The students believe the management is too authoritarian in its approach and the campus is a bit small (just 19 acres for 2500 students).
The UPTU exams are accused of asking the same questions almost every year which promotes rote-learning. The answer-script evaluation has always been a big source of trouble for all students. Copies are often lost which leads to a CARRY OVER PAPER note on the students' marksheet ruining the career of the student. The evaluators most of the times, are said to be evaluating the answerscripts in a hurry (for want of more money) thus without reading all the answers. It is said that step-marks are generally not given.
Some people also don't blame the faculty for such poor standards of teaching, instead blaming UPTU which gives them loads of syllabus to cover with relatively less time.
