Prior to World War II the town was part of the Prussian Province of East Prussia, within Germany. Until 1938 its German name was Lazdenen, but as it was of Baltic Old Prussian origin, the Nazi government changed it to Haselberg ("Hazel Mountain") in 1938. After World War II ended in 1945, the area was annexed by the Soviet Union and the town was renamed Krasnoznamensk.
