The Krane family is the name of noble family in Germany and Slovenia. The members of this family were (in the beginning) living just in Germany, then they have moved in Austria, Hungary and Slovenia. The name Krane has been known in several variations: Crane, Krane, Kranichberg, Crain.
The Krane family was mentioned by the 14th and 15th centuries as "Die Herren von Kranichberg" ("The Lords of Kranichberg"). But in the 16th century the family became known as Freiherrn von Krane ( Barons von Krane), and in this form the name is mentioned through history until today. The first famous member of family Krane was the emperors asistent Johann von Krane, wich was granted in baron status. The family had an enormous fortune and they were very important in the moment, when one of the members married Count Rothenburg, son of Princ of Hohenzollern, the famous German family. In renaissance they were also in nowadays Slovenia, where they had a castle, named Matena. In this period of excictens of family, they have been granted with second nobel titel zu Matena, so that they becam Barons von Krane zu Matena. In the 19. century, one of the members of the Krane family, generalmajor Sebastian von Krane zu Matena moved in Slovenia, where the emperor, king Franz Joseph I of Austria granted him in "Graf von Krane" (Count of Krane). The family became known also, because they have been united with the Barons Vandur ( von der Durr). In Slovenia the family lives still today.
