Kralj Petar Krešimir IV is a missile boat (fast attack craft) of the Croatian Navy. It is named after the Croatian king Petar Krešimir IV. It was built in the Kraljevica shipyard in 1991 and commissioned in 1992. It is an upgraded version of the Rade Končar missile boat class and is 8.5 meters longer. Kralj Petar Krešimir IV and sister ship Kralj Dmitar Zvonimir are only ships in the class. Potentially 3rd ship in the class was under consideration in 1999 but due to the budget costs and complications in modernizing Dimitar Zvonimir ensured that Kralj (king) class consisted only of 2 ships.
Kralj class missile boats were first introduced into service in 1992, originally were meant to replace Osa 1 class (soviet made missile boats) in Yugoslav Navy. Yugoslav Navy ordered 10 King class boats in 1990 with first ship delivered in late 1992 to Croatian Navy, 2nd Ship was never completed due to the war, and remaining 8 ships were canceled.
Croatia completed 2nd ship Dimitar Zvonimir in 2001. Dimitar Zvonimir is slightly larger than Peter Kresimir IV, but they support identical weapon systems and sensors. Croatia has no intention of building further ships in the King class, but instead will modernize existing two units with the latest radar/sensors, more powerful engines and new Close-in weapon system-RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile surface to Air missile system giving King class added capability.
Currently Kralj (King) class gunboats are largest warships with in Croatian navy; but, plans exist to purchase or domestically build 4 large corvettes. These will supplement existing fast attack crafts and are to enter service before 2012.
