The Kraken is a Marvel Comics supervillain.

[edit] History

The Kraken race was born many millennia ago. The exact date is unknown. The creature now most oftenly lies dormant in the seas, but can be called into battle by the sounds of a special horn called the "Proteus Horn". In modern days, this Horn was found by the villain Attuma who stored it in his cave for later use, but never did. The horn was later found by the villain Andromeda, who blew the Horn and used one of the Kraken to attack Atlantis. The attack was diverted by the Atlanteans, who used their strength to destroy the entrance to Atlantis. The rocks that fell trapped the Kraken creature deep within, probably killing it. Since then, no other Kraken creature has been seen in the comics.

A similar Kraken (a gigantic Octopus) appeared earlier in the comics Tales to Astonish #93 and Sub-Mariner #27.

[edit] In other media

The Kraken appears in the video game Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. It is depicted as as a fishman monster with four arms instead of tentacles. Summoned by Loki (in disguise as Mandarin at the time) to delay the heroes in Atlantis, it must be defeated by attacking continuously until it breaks one of the four columns ringing the room. By entering the shattered columns, the player activates a button-pressing minigame that enables him or her to damage The Kraken. This Kraken bears resemblance to the same creature from the movie Clash of the Titans.
