Kowalski (feminine: Kowalska, plural Kowalscy) is the second most common surname in Poland (139,719). It translates to blacksmith where it is the patronymic form of the name for Smith (see Kowal), other surnames such as Kowalczyk, and Kowalewicz were derived from the word Kowal.
