Kotulpur (Bengali: কোতুলপুর) is a town, community development bloc and assembly constituency in Bankura district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

[edit] Geography

Unlike most of Bankura district which is composed of red latté rite soil, Kotulpur, Patrasayer and Indas, blocks lie in alluvial zone. In this region the soil is deep, texturally medium fine, mostly acidic in soil reaction and moderately well drained. Major part of the region harvests more than one crop utilizing canal irrigation as well as ground water. [1]

Subsequent to Lord Cornwallis’ Permanent Settlement, parganas of the earlier period were converted into ‘thanas’ or police stations. As early as 1860, there is mention of Jahanabad (subsequently renamed Arambag), Kotulpur, Goghat and Raina police stations in Jahanabad subdivision.</ref> [2]

In the 2001 census, Kotulpur community development bloc had a total population of 167,543 of which 86,288 were males and 81,255 were females. Decadal growth for the period 1991-2001 was 15.92% for Kotulpur, against 13.79% in Bankura district. Decadal growth in West Bengal was 40.13%.[3]

Kotulpur Bloc had a total scheduled caste population of 57,776 and a scheduled tribe population of 5,328.[4]

Kotulpur is an intermediate panchayat in Bankura district, with Desra-Koalpara, Gopinathpur, Kotulpur, Lego, Lowgram, Madanmohanpur, Mirzapur and Sihar village panchayats under it.[5][6]

In the 2006 elections to the state assembly, Kalpana Koley of CPI(M) won the Kotulpur seat defeating her nearest rival Aloka Sen Mazumdar of AITC . In 2001, Manashi Ghose of CPI(M) defeated Sunil Das of AITC. Gouripada Dutta of CPI(M) defeated Nikhil Bose of INC in 1996, Akshoy Kumar Koley of INC in 1991, and Bablu Koley of INC in 1987. Gunadhar Choudhury of CPI(M) defeated Akshoy Kumar Koley of INC in 1982 and 1977. [7]

Kotulpur is part of Vishnupur (Lok Sabha constituency).[8]

As per order of the Delimitation Commission in respect of the delimitation of constituencies in the West Bengal, assembly constituency no.256 Kotulpur (SC) will cover Deshrahkoyalpara, Gopinathpur, Kotulpur, Lego, Mirzapur and Sihar gram panchayats of Kotulpur community development bloc and Gelia, Jagannathpur, Kuchiakol, Maynapur, Salda, Uttarbarh, Hetia, Routkhanda and Shyamnagar gram panchayats of Jaypur community development bloc. It will form part of parliamentary constituency no. 37 Bishnupur (SC).[9]
