Kothmale

Kothmale community radio station is located in the central hill region of Sri Lanka, the surrounding countryside is green and mountainous and is primarily a rural region scattered with small farms, rice paddies and tea plantations. The station serves a population of 200,000 people; sixty villages (with an average population of 400 each) and three rural towns (Nawalapitiya, pop. 64,000; Gampola, pop. 56,000; and Hatton, pop. 54,000) are located within the radio station's target area. The station broadcasts a variety of programs besides the daily radiobrowsing show which cover topics such as Human Rights, International Cultural Belief Systems, World Leaders and Social Movements, Law and Change, Women's Rights and Children's Issues. The Radio Listeners Group is a voluntary organisation of concerned volunteers, listeners and presenters of KCR. They provide feedback and support to the station and are independent of the government controlled Sri Lankan Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC).
