Kothavalasa is located at 17.9° N 83.2° E.[1] It has an average elevation of 209 meters (688 feet).

As of 2001 India census,[2] Kothavalasa had a population of 12,298. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Kothavalasa has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 62%.
