Kosovo (Albanian: Kosova or Kosovë, Serbian: Косово, Kosovo) is a highly disputed territory in southeastern Europe. After international negotiations failed to reach a consensus on an acceptable constitutional status, Kosovo's provisional government unilaterally declared independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008.[1] The Republic of Kosovo (Albanian: Republika e Kosovës, Serbian: Република Косово, Republika Kosovo) is anticipated to receive partial international recognition as an independent state. The Serbian government regards the territory as an integral part of Serbia, the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija (Serbian: Аутономна покрајина Косово и Метохија, Autonomna pokrajina Kosovo i Metohija, also Космет, Kosmet; Albanian: Krahina Autonome e Kosovës dhe Metohisë) and proactively annulled the declaration.
Pristina, also spelled Priština (Albanian: Prishtinë or Prishtina, Serbian: Приштина or Priština), is the capital and the largest city of Kosovo.
It is estimated that the current population of the city stands between 550,000 and 600,000. The city has a majority Albanian population, alongside other smaller communities including Serbs, Bosniaks, Roma and others. It is the administrative, educational, cultural center of Kosovo. The city is home to the University of Priština and has an international airport, Priština International Airport, with the IATA airport code of PRN and ICAO code LYPR (temporarily BKPR while UNMIK in effect).
Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Rugova (December 2, 1944 – January 21, 2006) was a Kosovar politician of Albanian descent who was the first President of Kosovo and of its leading political party, the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK). During the many conflicts in Kosovo, Rugova was regarded as a moderate ethnic Albanian leader, and later by some as "Father of the Nation".
