[edit] Selected article nominations

[edit] Imjin War

I think we should have the Imjin War article as the featured article on the Korea portal because solely on the fact that westerners should know about it. It isn't very detailed or outstanding but I think foreigners should learn about the Seven Year War and learn about how dirty it got during the war. Foreigners might not consider it important but the war itself is a moral to Koreans. I strongly suggest that someone put up the Seven Year War article as the featured article. Good friend100 00:43, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

support, for the next round. to balance out the page, hopefully we can find a south korean image & north korean bio, or vice versa. Appleby 20:48, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] various non-joseon dynasty nominations

how about Korean cuisine, Kimchi? for south korea, 1988 Summer Olympics, Jeju-do, or Military of South Korea? for north korea, how about Pyongyang, Korean People's Army, Juche, North Korean won? Appleby 20:48, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Crown of Silla

Next time everyone decides to do a featured article I was thinking maybe the Crown of Silla so any comments on improving it would be helpful so I can fix it up. Thanks. Tortfeasor 07:49, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

i think this would be a nice article to feature. if this goes up with the hwaseong image, it would be nice to have a contemporary person for the featured bio, to round things out. Appleby 23:30, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Korean name

just occurred to me, if others are interested, it might be worth trying to save this featured article from being demoted. see Wikipedia:Featured article review/Korean name. Appleby 07:38, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Selected picture nominations

how about Image:Korean art hdkim-dance.jpg? can someone write up a decent caption? Appleby or how about ? Appleby 19:34, 18 May 2006 (UTC) or ? Appleby 04:29, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

I like the Korean madang nori image & the Imperial-family image. (Wikimachine 16:16, 16 June 2006 (UTC))
Well, seated in the middle of the royal family image is Kojong. To the left, standing, the man with the tall hat and what looks like a mustache is Sunjong, Kojong's son by Queen Min. I think the baby is Princess Dokhye, Kojong's last child. Beyond that, not sure. I've seen this photo before, probably have a labelled version around. Sunjong doesn't look real healthy, so this is probably after the coffee poisoning. --Dan 01:11, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

if nobody minds, i recently came across & would like to put it up on the portal. much better than the current or other nominated ones, imho. Appleby 22:49, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

I'd like to nominate pic of Kimbap. It's absolutely amazing! It should be a featured picture! (Wikimachine 23:35, 10 February 2007 (UTC))

[edit] Selected biography nominations

[edit] Ahn Eak-tai

Anyone please take a look at this. I think it might need a few touches in the end, but much of it is superb. It's better than the Jang Yeongsil article. (Wikimachine 05:53, 2 July 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Kim Okgyun

I created another article! Kim Okgyun. I think people could fix it, and it ought to be nominated as the selected biography. What do you think? (Wikimachine 17:39, 31 May 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Woo Jang-choon

I'm finished with Woo Jang-choon! If anybody wants to take a look at it... I think it ought to be in the selected biography section as well! (Wikimachine 17:05, 7 June 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Gwanggaeto the Great of Goguryeo

I thought that my works were so good. But I scanned through Korea related topics notice board to do list, and I found these great biography articles. I think this is the best of the 5 or so that I found on the list. (Wikimachine 05:11, 27 September 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Harisu

This article has just been listed as a GA, so I thought I'd nominate it as a selected biography. PC78 08:27, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Naming conventions

A discussion has begun at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Korean) over various tweaks to the Korean naming conventions. Topics include surnames, counties, temples, rivers, and mountains. Please comment! -- Visviva 06:44, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Korea Independent Commission Against Corruption

Could someone please post the Revised Romanisation for this page and check whether the McCune Reischauer romanisation (which I did) is correct? Thank you! -dandan xD 2:48 pm 16 Sep 2006 AEST

[edit] Merge or Hierarchize w/ Wikipedia:WikiProject Korea

Let's merge this with WikiProject Korea, along with Korea-related discussion board. (Wikimachine 16:14, 21 September 2006 (UTC))

I agree. I thought that portals were more of a subpage of wikiprojects. After all, it is a wikiproject that collaborates to improve articles — the portal functions more as a directory or a front page similiar to that of Wikipedia's main page — or this case, it serves as a list for users to individually take care of articles (I honestly didn't know the existence of WP:KO until now). —Mirlen 01:24, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Wikiproject Korea was just established a couple days ago =). If we could introduce all the portal editors here to Wikiproject Korea with the same goals and objectives, that would be a lot more productive. Good friend100 01:42, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Ah, that would make sense why I didn't hear of it. And merging WP:KO and Portal:KO would not be a bad idea — after all, both have the same scopes and goals: to improve Korean-related articles. I'm afraid I'm too tied up with other WPs, mainly WP:Me, to join other projects — but I'll be gnomish in my watch. Anyone here who's mainly in charge of running the portal (or perhaps a vote among both groups)? —Mirlen 03:34, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
Um, no. You're talking about three very different things here. For the role of portals, see Wikipedia:Portals. For the role of notice boards, see Wikipedia:Regional notice boards. These each serve very different purposes from a WikiProject, which is primarily a way to work on specific editing tasks (whereas the RWNB is more of a topical version of the Village Pump, and the Portal is a snazzy public entry-point). Of course, WikiProject members are more than welcome to take on portal and noticeboard maintenance; both the portal and the noticeboard are in a bit of a mess currently. -- Visviva 04:14, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
Of course a Portal, involves more participation than a notice board (you are right in that it serves more than just a list; after all, voting for selected articles involves participation), but (forgive me) I fail to see how my earlier definition ("front page similiar to that of Wikipedia's main page") of what a portal does is "very different" from what is stated in WP:P:

"Portals are pages intended to serve as 'Main Pages' for specific topics or areas."
"The idea of a portal is to help readers and/or editors manoeuvre their way through Wikipedia topic areas through pages similar to the Main Page."

Perhaps depending on the portal, it serves different tasks, but I would have to disagree that the objective of a WikiProject is to focus on specific editing tasks. If it did once upon a time, I think the function of WP has expanded over the course of several years. Again, this isn't true for all WPs, but certainly it goes true for some. The general definition that I can say that'll cover nearly all functions of WPs is to improve a specific topic or area in not only articles, but lists, images, templates, etc., but unlike a portal, it focuses on collaboration through its members. Portals, on the other hand, "are meant for both readers and editors of Wikipedia" (WP:P) — for users to individually take care of articles by "[manoeuvring] their way through Wikipedia topic areas," as WP:P points out.
I hope you aren't offended by my comments in the function of portals as to specifically refer to this portal in specific. I think this portal is wonderful, and setting up a good one such as this isn't easy when you seem to be the only one who took care of things in this portal. :)Mirlen 22:04, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] To Korea portal editors

I suppose WP:KO Wikiproject Korea is basically the same as Portal Korea but if you would like to join, please do. Wikiproject Korea focuses on improving Korea related articles. Good friend100 15:11, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Translation needed

Can someone help translating "발행발행" that I found on the Bank of Korea website? I was helping on South Korean won. Using some simple online dictionary and some guessing from Chinese cognate, I would guess 발행 = issue and 발행 = discontinue. But I need someone who actually speak the Korean to verify that. Thanks. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 12:14, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

발행 means "publish" or such like that. 발행발행 may be error, and just repeating the two identical words of 발행. I want to know where did you exactly find it. --Hairwizard91 02:45, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
It would indeed be helpful if you could provide the specific link. I think perhaps there was a slight error in cutting-and-pasting? Looking here, I see fields for "최초발행" (first issue) and "발행중지" (discontinuation). Am I looking at the right page? -- Visviva 05:04, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
Yes, it was indeed a copy-and-paste error. The link is here. The later date of each note. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 07:45, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 조선총독부의 조선사편수회 Joseonsa Pyeonsuhoe

Endroit are trying to remove some part of the article in Joseonsa Pyeonsuhoe even though it is cited article. I wish somebody help me to progress the article about Joseonsa Pyeonsuhoe(조선총독부의 조선사편수회). --Hairwizard91 21:11, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

See Talk:Reorganization Agent of Korean History#Samguk Yusa, regarding the Simplified Chinese character on the left side of Image:Hwanin hwanguk.jpg. Could this character have been used in the 13th century original version of Samguk Yusa? Please comment.--Endroit 21:24, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
Of course not, as you well know. Korea does not use the simplified Chinese, which didn't even exist in the time Samguk Yusa was written. --Dan 18:36, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
Please research especially 國. You can find difference. --Hairwizard91 17:34, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
I just describe it based on the article of Korea Britanica encyclopedia. You seems to do original research. --Hairwizard91 22:18, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Another help on translation requested

For South Korean hwan. From [1]

Thanks. --ChoChoPK (球球PK) (talk | contrib) 14:20, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Rough translation: Although the currency unit changed from the won to the hwan due to the emergency exchange measures (?), the bank-notes at this time still displayedhwan as "won"; this was due to the fact that those notes had already been produced by the US Federal printing office before the emergency exchange measures were decided. -- Visviva 15:42, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fix

Could somebody fix the "todo" list? The redirect for Korea-related topics todo list didn't work, so I put the Korean WikiProject todo list, which seems to be too large. Maybe putting it at thebottom might help. (Wikimachine 17:28, 25 December 2006 (UTC))

[edit] Inactive???

I'm not sure, but the portal has been inactive for a very long time, I think... Maybe it's time for a new selected biography & a newly selected article. Also, someone expert in formatting should fix the todo section the original link (I placed WP:KO link for todo).

I nominate Ahn Eak-tai for the selected biography.

For featured article, how about Cuisine of Korea? It makes me hungry every time I skim over it. (Wikimachine 06:40, 2 January 2007 (UTC))

I think Cuisine of Korea is a good candidate but more references would be more helpful. I find that the information in the article is true but some topics like dog meat might need soe references. Good friend100 16:04, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] new featured picture

I think we can have another featured picture. Good friend100 17:14, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Anything. (Wikimachine 17:25, 25 March 2007 (UTC))
I promote . (Wikimachine 17:44, 25 March 2007 (UTC))

[edit] Goguryeo-China Wars

Currently there is a move request for Goguryeo-China Wars to be moved to Military history of Goguryeo. Please vote and offer your opinion on the subject here Talk:Goguryeo-China wars, thanks. Good friend100 23:58, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Brand new Article for Korea

Please help me expanding this brand new article Republic of Korea Passport. Kingj123 21:39, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Request for Outside Views

Hello contributors to the Korea Project! I was wondering if anyone would be willing to take a look at a few articles and lend a much-needed outside opinion. I'm particularly interested in the views of admins or long-time contributors, since one user has accused others (including me) of puppetry. The sites are involving Korean universities. Please especially consider taking a look if you did not attend any of these fine institutions, as the more neutral an opinion, the better.

1) Korea_University Problem: I believe this site is written like an advertisement WP:ADS (you can see what I said on the KU talk page or my own user profile) and stated my intentions to take a look at it. This provoked a rather nasty reply on my own talk page as well as the talk page of Korea_University. I still intend to try and improve the article to make it more encyclopedic, but I have stopped trying to come to agreement on the talk page because there is only one user responding- and I have no interest in continuing a useless conversation with him until I actually have re-written the article so that I can show him what I mean.

2) Sungkyunkwan_University The same user as above has decided that I am a student of Sungkyunkwan (false) and intends to try and 'retaliate' by attacking that site. I prefer not to be further involved with this user (he is misquoting me and continuing to act uncivil) so if anyone who is unconnected and can remain neutral would like to step in and help, please do.

In whole, I think all the universities (and even the article on SKY) could use the help of some neutrality to add to Wp:npov. If anyone is willing to take a look (and especially if you can not be accused of being a puppet, etc) please do! Thanks to all! Epthorn 16:33, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Brand new Article for Korea

Please help me expanding this brand new article Architecture of South Korea. I first copied word for word from Korean architecture, we need to expand our original texts. Kingj123 16:57, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wildlife in Korea

FYI. There are articles on almost every Asian country except Korea. See Category:Wildlife by country. I noticed this during an edit on Wildlife of Azerbaijan there is a nice navbar on the right side listing "Wildlife of Asia series" with Korea in red letters.-----Adimovk5 (talk) 18:52, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
