Korpral is a Swedish rank awarded after 5 to 6 months of conscript training two months prior the promotion to Furir.

[edit] Origin

Korpral means chief. A korpral held the position as platoon (korpralskap) leader of 24 men during the Swedish allotment system. The korpralskap consisted of four rote (teams) of 6 men each. Each rote was led by a rote master.

[edit] Reform 1833/37

Korporals were considerred petty officers in the Cavalry before the reorganization 1833/37, when Korprals were elevated to Sergeants and the rank was moved down in status.

[edit] Reform 1972

Korprals were elevated to Furir during the establishmet of a new personnel corps Gruppbefäl (Squad Leaders). The rank Vicekorpral was removed.

A corresponding artillery and air-defense rank, established: 1500, removed: 1972 (changed to Korpral)

A rank above Korpral Established: 1858, removed: 1914 (personnel with the rank were elevated to Furir)

Ranks existed until 1972 for deputy squad leaders. The corresponding English rank is Lance Corporal.
