Korobeiniki

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Korobeiniki" (Russian: "Коробе́йники"), also called "Korobeyniki" and "Korobushka", and The Peddlers, is a Russian song based on a poem with the same name written in 1861 by Nikolai Alekseevich Nekrasov and printed in the Sovremennik magazine in 1861. Korobeyniki were peddlers selling fabric, haberdashery, books etc. in pre-revolutionary Russia. The song is also a popular Yiddish Folk.

The song quickly acquired the status of a Russian folk song, and is known for its dance-friendly structure and ever-increasing tempo.

It was one of the three tunes featured in the Game Boy version of the video game Tetris and has become closely associated with the game in Western popular culture. Doctor Spin's 1992 novelty Eurodance cover (under the name "Tetris") reached #6 on the UK singles chart. US rock band Ozma released a rock version on their 2001 album The Doubble Donkey Disc. Hedonix also produced a psychedelic trance edition, titled "Don't Mess with Tetris" in 2004, which was released on Electric Power Pole Records. German techno group Scooter sampled it in 2007 on their song "Whistling Dave" from the album Jumping All Over the World. Tetris Holding LLC holds a sound trademark on the song for use in video games. [1] It was also performed and recorded by the California-based vocal ensemble Chanticleer in their album "Wondrous Love" (1997). The US instrumental power metal band Powerglove recorded their own version of the song simply entitled "Tetris" on their debut EP Total Pwnage (2005).

Oy polnym polna korobushka

Yest' i sitets i parcha.
Pozhaley, dusha-zaznobushka,
Molodetskogo plecha.

Vyydu, vyydu v rozh' vysokuyu,
Tam do nochki pogozhu,
Kak zavizhu chernookuyu,
Vse tovary razlozhu.

Tseny sam platil nemalyye,
Ne torguysya, ne skupis',
Podstavlyay-ka gubki alyye,
Blizhe k molodtsu sadis'.

Vot uzh pala noch' tumannaya,
Zhdyot udalyy molodets.
Chu, idyot! — prishla zhelannaya,
Prodayot tovar kupets.

Katya berezhno torguyetsya
Vsyo boitsya peredat',
Paren' s devitsey tseluyetsya,
Prosit tseny nabavlyat'.

Znayet tol'ko noch' glubokaya,
Kak poladili oni.
Raspryamis' ty, rozh' vysokaya,
Taynu svyato sokhrani!

Oy legka legka korobushka
Plech ne rezhet remeshok.
A vsego vzyala zaznobushka,
biryuzovyy perstenyok

Oy, the box is full, so full,

It's got chintz and brocade,
Have mercy, my sweetie pie,
On this dashing lad's shoulders.

I'll go out, out into the tall rye!
and wait there till midnight,
when I see the dark-eyed beauty,
Then I'll showcase my goods.

I myself paid no small prices,
So don't skimp or bargain:
Bring here your crimson lips,
Sit nearer to your dashing lad!

The foggy night has already fallen,
The dashing lad awaits...
Listen, it's her! — the desired one has come
The merchant is selling his wares.

Katya haggles tenderly,
Afraid to pay too much.
The youth kisses the maiden,
Asking her to raise the price.

Only the deep night knows
How they came to terms,
Straighten up now, tall rye,
And keep their secret sacredly!

Oy, my box is light, so light
The strap is not cutting into my shoulder
And all my sweetie took
was a turquoise ring.
