From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Korgen is a former municipality in Nordland county, Norway.

Korgen was separated from Hemnes July 1, 1918. It was again merged with Hemnes January 1, 1964.

The village of Korgen is today the administrative centre of Hemnes municipality. It's the largest village in Hemnes with its 1555 inhabitants (per 1.jan 2005). Korgen is connected by road to Mo i Rana, Mosjøen og Bleikvassli (Riksvei 806).

[edit] Geography

Korgen is situated inland and is surrounded by mountains. Southwest towards Mosjøen lies Korgfjellet (Vesterfjellet), to the east is Klubben, and to the north towards Mo i Rana is Kangsen.

[edit] Korgfjellet

Many Norwegians have heard about Korgen because of the notorious Korgfjellet which quite a few times has divided the country in half with poor road conditions and traffic accidents during the winter. This is now avoided after the finishing of the Korgfjelltunnel in 2005.
