[edit] History
Korean emigration to the UK is thought to have begun soon after the Second World War but the Korean community did not grow to a significant size until the late 1960s/early 1970s. Most of the early arrivals were a mixture of businessmen & students looking to stay permanently in the country, as well as immigrant families.
[edit] Population, Distribution and Culture
In 2001, South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade estimated there were 40,810 Koreans in the United Kingdom, making them the ninth-largest population of overseas Koreans.[1] Many live in New Malden. Kingston and Merton are the two London boroughs with the largest Korean communities; Golders Green also has a growing population. There are also many Korean students living temporarily in Britain.
The UK is South Korea's number one trade and investment partner in Europe and is home to over 100 Korean companies, including a large number of Korean banks, investment and insurance companies based in and around central London. In the Kingston area, there are a range of companies from Korean supermarkets to specialist travel agents.
In terms of culture, the Korean Festival is the one of the biggest festivals celebrating Korean culture in Europe. The free annual event normally takes place on August and is organised by the Korean Residents Society. It takes place at the Fairfield Recreation Ground in Kingston-upon-Thames (in South West London).
