Description

Flag depicting the Arms of the Komnenos [Comnenus] family under Isaac I Komnenos (1057-1059). A military family originating from Paphlagonia, the Komnenos dynasty of Byzantine Emperors began when Isaac Komnenos, a general of the Eastern armies of Michael VI, led a successful coup against Michael and was proclaimed emperor in 1057. He is credited as being the first Byzantine Emperor to have adopted the double-headed eagle as an emblem.
