Kolaba Fort

Kolaba Fort (sometimes "Kulaba Fort") is an old military fortification in India. It is situated in the sea at a distance of 1-2 km from the shores of Alibag in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, India. Shivaji Maharaj constructed the fort in 1680. It has two gates: one shoreside and the other seaside. An interesting feature of this fort is that it was a freshwater well inside, even though it is a seaside fort. In the autumn, it can be reached by wading through waist-deep water at low tide, however, at high tide, boats must be used to reach it. (It should not to be confused with Colaba of Mumbai.)

Kulaba Fort The fort of Kulaba was built by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1652 to keep a check on the activities of the foreign naval powers of English, Portuguese and the Siddhi of Janjira. It is a testimony to the foresight of the great maratha king. The Kulaba fort is still in good condition and one can go to visit the fort by walking across the seashore at low tide or by taking a buggy ride @ 25 / 30 Rs. Per person. However be sure to check the proper timings to visit the fort as it is dangerous to try to go to the fort at high tide. You get approximately 3 to 4 hours to see the fort and come back.

The fort has two main entrances, one at the sea side and other towards Alibag. The average height of the fort walls is 25 feet. The fort has sweet water wells and some buildings inside its premises. The Siddhivinayak temple inside the fort was built by Raghoji Angre in 1759. The Ganpati Idol in the temple is very beautiful and many people worship it.

Precautions to be taken when Going to Kulaba Fort - Alibag Please check the Tide before going to visit the Kulaba fort, you can ask the policemen posted on the beach or check the board displaying the tide timings. You can visit the fort between the high and low tide. the maximum time you get is approximately 3 to 4 hours and that is enough to see the fort. Please take care as a lot of people have died while returning from the fort after beginning of high tide and because of not taking proper precautions while coming back.
