- The name "Koki" is a combination of two Japanese characters - 幸 "Happy" and 喜 "Pleased". Many commentators have pointed out the coincidence of the name in his chosen profession, but it is indeed his real name.
- Mitani is known to be very shy, gentle, and kind, with a rather bumbly, British aura to him. He's one of the most pleasant yet self-conscious characters in Japanese Showbiz[citation needed].
- In an attempt to add his own character to his movies, as a director he takes most of his scenes with a one-scene=one-shot system, moving the camera around as opposed to cutting. He claims this comes from his experience in theatre, where there are of course, no cuts.
- Mitani is married to Japanese actress Satomi Kobayashi.
Mitani does not use a computer.
- Despite loving the acclaim his work brings him, Mitani hates parties and functions. He comes in, makes a speech, and leaves, invariably all within the first 30 minutes of an event.
