Koffee with Karan [sic] is a talk show, hosted by Mumbai (India) based film producer and director Karan Johar.

The show airs on STAR One & STAR World from 9pm to 10pm IST and on MHz Networks television Channel 56 on 11 AM to 11:30 AM on Sundays.

The show is noted for its fresh and witty appeal, and it is very popular with the younger audiences. The show began to air in 2004 and was a huge success. The first episode aired on November 19, 2004 and the first season ended on May 27, 2005. The show had been put on hold due to Johar's commitment to his next directorial project, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006).

The show brings together celebrities who are interviewed in the show's trademark informal style. The show has many sections such as a "rapid fire" round in which a volley of questions are thrown at the celebrity who has to think of answers off the top of their heads sometimes with hilarious results. The winner receives a coffee hamper. Sometimes the show includes opinions from members of the public.

The first season was huge success, and the programme became the first English entertainment show to ever get a huge rating in India.[1] The episode in which Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta appeared together was the highest viewed episode in season one.[2]

The second season began on February 11, 2007.[3]

Season one began showing on November 19, 2004. The first three episodes featured the people Johar had already worked with such as Shahrukh Khan and Kajol, Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan. Some of the episodes had a certain theme such as an episode featuring models or family members. Bipasha Basu appeared with Miss Universe, Lara Dutta and Amitabh Bachchan appeared with son Abhishek Bachchan. Cousins Fardeen Khan and Zayed Khan appeared together. Brothers, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol appeared together. One episode featured sisters, Malaika Arora-Khan and Amrita Arora. Husband and wife Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh appeared together.

British director Gurinder Chadha was interviewed with Indian director Farah Khan. One episode was a "wives special" and featured Gauri Khan (the wife of Shahrukh Khan) and Suzanne Roshan (the wife of Hrithik Roshan). Roshan would later make an appearance with friends Farhan Akhtar and Uday Chopra. Other pairs included Aishwarya Rai and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Shabana Azmi and Shobha De, Ekta Kapoor and Shweta Menon, Sushmita Sen and Sanjay Dutt, Konkona Sen Sharma and Rahul Bose, Priyanka Chopra and Arjun Rampal. Kaal co-stars John Abraham and Vivek Oberoi appeared together as well as rising stars Esha Deol and Shahid Kapoor. Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta made their second appearance together. Hema Malini and Zeenat Aman appeared together and television actors Smriti Irani and Sakshi Tanwar, made an appearance.

The season finale featured Shahrukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan together in which they participated in the rapid fire round. The rapid fire was judged by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Farah Khan and Farhan Akhtar who declared both actors the winner. Kajol made a brief appearance with Khan and Bachchan, and finally Jaya Bachchan joined them for the last segment.

Season two began airing on February 11, 2007. The first episode re-united the three stars of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai - Kajol, Rani Mukerji and Shahrukh Khan. The second episode featured the stars of the film Krrish - Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra. Mallika Sherawat made her first appearance on the show with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.[4] Vijay Mallya and Shobhaa De were featured in an episode.

Some of the episodes featured siblings together: Karisma Kapoor made her first appearance on the show with sister Kareena Kapoor and her then boyfriend Shahid Kapoor. Saif Ali Khan and his sister Soha Ali Khan were featured in an episode as well as Sanjay Dutt and his sister Priya Dutt. Other siblings that appeared on the show were brothers Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor with their sister Reema Jain. Rishi Kapoor's wife Neetu Singh appeared in the same episode.[5] Jaya Bachchan and Hema Malini appeared with their daughters Shweta Bachchan-Nanda and Esha Deol. Shilpa Shetty made her first appearance on the show with sister and mother, Shamita Shetty and Sunanda Shetty post Celebrity Big Brother.

Johar dedicated an episode to the directors of Hindi cinema, he interviewed Rakesh Roshan, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Rajkumar Hirani and Kunal Kohli. Ekta Kapoor came on the show with Ronit Roy, Ram Kapoor and Hiten Tejwani.

Season two also featured many people who were appearing for the first time on the show such as Tabu, Mira Nair, Kunal Kapoor, Ritesh Deshmukh, Rakhi Sawant, Carol Gracias, Rahul Roy, Anil Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna.

Real life couple John Abraham and Bipasha Basu made their second appearance on the show but this time together. Preity Zinta made her third appearance on the show with Bobby Deol. Some of the people who made solo appearances were Richard Gere, Madhuri Dixit and Himesh Reshammiya.

The last few episodes featured Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif, in her first appearance on the show.[6] In the next episode, Shabana Azmi, husband Javed Akhtar and his son Farhan Akhtar made an appearance together.[7] The subsequent episode featured the team of Om Shanti Om, director Farah Khan and the stars of the film Shahrukh Khan and newcomer Deepika Padukone.[8] The final two episodes featured a behind the scenes look at the show and the Koffee Awards, given out to previous guests.

[edit] Koffee Awards 2007

For the season finale of the show, Karan Johar had introduced the Koffee Awards 2007, which featured the most memorable moments and episodes from Season 2 competing in different categories.[9] The winners were chosen by by fashion designer Rohit Bal, actress Malaika Arora and comedian Cyrus Broacha and were announced on the season finale of the episode, which aired on September 16, 2007 on STAR One and STAR World.[10]

Rapid Fire
The segment involves Johar asking a volley of questions to the guest, in which they have to answer as quickly as possible. The questions usually involve making choices between two options or just giving a straight answer. Johar usually forces the guest to choose one option of the two he presents.
The Lie-O-Meter
Johar uses a bleep, which he calls the Lie-O-Meter, to indicate if he thinks the guest is lying. The Lie-O-Meter was mostly used in season one.
Opinions
Sometimes the show features a segment which allows the guest to see and hear other people's opinions. They may come from the general public or even people within the industry itself.
