Kodki is a very small and active village, located 11km west of Bhuj. It is one of 24 gaams occupied by the SKPLC - Shree Kutch Leva Patel Community.
It is famous for its fiery hot chillies and the Shree Kutch Gangaji. Kodki was originally a little settlement of Rebari and Maaldharis. (Nomadic tribe, whose main activity is cow herding). The original name was Bhavanipur, named after the Maaldhari's family goddess Bhavani Maa. In 2007 there it had a population of approximately 4000 people, and a total of 600 houses.
As one arrives in Kodki from Manukva Road, one is greeted by a beautiful site of Shree Kodki Gangaji, an ancient temple visited by Lord Shree Raamchandra, Lord Shree Krishna, Lord Dratateya and Lord Krishna.
At one time the waters from Gangaji and Yamunaji used to overflow into the nearby river into Khari Talav and into Khari Naadi. Today, due to lack of successive Monsoon seasons, the waters have somewhat dried up. However there is an enormous effort by the NRI Kodkians to revitalise this holy spot and therefore there is a major activity in tree plantation and generally restoring this holy spot to its previous glory days.
Every Sunday one can see coach loads of tourists and picnic makers arrive from places as far as Rajkot. There are a number of NRI’s who feel very strongly about putting back the Gangaji on the hot map for visitors. Earliest arrival of Kanbis dates back to 1870's (from Dahisara and Hiranis). Halais and Hiranis were the earliest Kanbi’s to settle in Kodki and take up agriculture.
Today the gaam is a thriving place for Kanbis, who have been extremely successful due to their entrepreneurial skills, agriculture, the art of saving for rainy days, hard work and community networking. Kanbis of Kodki today are involved in various professions from agricultural, businesses in Bhuj, Rajkot, Ahemdabad, IT, banking, outsourcing, construction to import & export.[1]
