The Knowledge of London is the test for would be London cabbies, it is a test of London Streets, buildings, clubs, courts and hotels in fact anything that is in a six mile radius from Charring Cross is fair game. To earn your bill (license and badge) you must first know all this, and when you have visited every street and noted every building within this six mile area, you can then attend appearances (tests) at the Public Carriage Office (PCO). You will then be expected to take the examiner from A tO B orally naming every street you take on route. When you have satisfied the staff at the PCO that you are conversant with the required knowledge of the area, then and then only are you able to drive a licensed Hackney Carriage. The Knowledge takes around three years to obtain and there is also a Criminal Investigation Bureau and medical checks, to make sure you are fit and proper to hold this license.
