The Knowledge Channel is the first and only all-educational cable TV channel in the Philippines, established by ABS-CBN, made available for free in public schools nationwide.
The channel's motto is "Knowledge Channel: A Corporate Response to a Social Need", reflecting the channel's duty to educate through the use of television.
[edit] Brief history
The Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI), originally under the name Sky Foundation, Inc., is a not-for-profit foundation that was incorporated in 1999 with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission. KCFI exists in the hope of contributing to the vision of "a community of educated, empowered, and responsible citizens working relentlessly for a better Philippines". Its Board of Trustees is composed of senior officers from various companies under the Lopez Group, including Mr. Oscar M.Lopez and Eugenio Lopez III, former Department of Education Secretary Dr. Armand Fabella, and AIM Professor Dr. Felipe Alfonso. Ms. Rina Lopez-Bautista is the founder of KCFI and concurrently holds the positions of President and Executive Director.
The channel went on the air on November 6, 1999, providing 18 hours of curriculum and non-curriculum-based programs on cable television that supplemented the DepEd’s curriculum. KCFI entered into a 10-year MoA with DepEd, with the DepEd proclaiming the channel as mandatory viewing in all public schools in 2000.
Today, the Knowledge Channel is available to over 2.67 million public school students in 1,528 public elementary and high schools in 40 provinces in all regions of the country, and has an expanded household viewership in 58 provinces. Out of almost 42,000 public schools throughout the country, only 3.6% have access to Knowledge Channel.
