Knocknagree

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Knocknagree (Irish: Cnoc na gree (the hill of the horse stud), is located in the North-West of County Cork in the Republic of Ireland. It is approximately one mile from the Cork-Kerry border, and looks south towards the Blackwater River.

The village has in 2004-2005 seen extensive redevelopment on the "Fairfield" or Village Green and a huge debt of gratitude is due to our local County Council engineer Mr. Martin Corcoran. Before the advent of the modern cattle-mart it was the venue of one of the largest livestock markets in Munster. The monthly "fair " as it was known died out in the 1970's. The village has a claim to fame that the Temperance Society would not be proud of. In the 1950's there were about 50 households in total, of these more than 40 had liquor licenses. About 6 were regular bars that kept normal hours, but on fair days they all opened for business. The village is on the southern perimeter of Sliabh Luachra ( rush mountain ), one of the few remaining bastions of traditional Irish fiddle music.

[edit] Knocknagree GAA

The club was founded in 1956 in Sheahan's hall. It has won 10 Duhallow titles and two County Championships. The GAA is very strong in the community. Thanks to extensive volunteer work and generous local support and sponsorship Knockngree GAA club can boast of having one of the best venues in the area. The main pitch was professionally floodlit in 2006. In 2007 it hosted the first Duhallow Junior A Football final to be played under lights. Ballydemond were victorious over Dromtariffe on the occasion.

The club crest was designed in 2002 by a local artist. It features a horse's head superimposed against a hill. A traditional Irish fiddle is in the left upper corner and an open book in the right upper corner. These are reminders of Knocknagree's musical and literary heritage. A Blackwater bridge is featured in the lower foreground to symbolise the club's border location. Significantly the leaping salmon faces the Cork side of the border.

This year's Junior A's will be steered by Sean Walsh (Trainer), Michael Brosnan and Eamon MacSweeney (selectors). Billy O'Neill has recently joined the selection team.
