[edit] Becoming "green"

KMBQ is working on an environmentally friendly (or "green") energy plan with Mat-Su Energy, making it the first station in Alaska to broadcast under solar and wind energy.[1]

[edit] History

KMBQ was formerly the call letters for an Album Oriented Rock (AOR) radio station at 93.7 FM in Shreveport, Louisiana, from 1971 to the mid 1980s. KMBQ was the FM sister station to a Top 40 radio station, KEEL 710 AM. The "Q" was known for innovative programming such as "The Midnight Album Hour" where entire albums were played in their entirety every midnight; "two-for-Tuesdays" and "Triple Play weekends". The station sponsored concerts featuring 70's superstars like The Eagles (featuring local resident Don Henley); Rick Derringer (featuring Shreveport native guitarist Danny Johnson); The Moody Blues; Toto; Kansas; Fleetwood Mac; Steve Miller (nearby Dallas, TX native); Lynyrd Skynyrd; Allman Brothers; Supertramp; Golden Earring, and other similar 1970 rock groups. In 1985 Multimedia Broadcasting Company, the owner of KMBQ/KEEL radio, changed the format from Album Rock to Country and call letters from KMBQ to KITT. A year later KTAL FM, a sleepy, 100,000 watt easy listening station licensed to nearby Texarkana, with studios located in Shreveport, was revamped into "98 Rocks", bringing aboard several famous KMBQ Disk Jockeys including Smokin' Dave Oden and Tom Michaels.
