KlipFolio is a desktop dashboard for Microsoft Windows. The program uses different Klips to display information that a user chooses to have in front of themselves at all times. There are over four thousand different Klips which display information like the weather conditions, e-mail, news, comic strips, and business information.

The KlipFolio application has three variants:

  1. KlipFolio Enterprise: a departmental dashboard used by businesses to place key performance indicators or metrics on the desktop.
  2. KlipFolio Branded: a branded desktop application used by online businesses to encourage and facilitate customer interaction.
  3. KlipFolio: a freeware sidebar that can be used to easily display relevant information to the user.

[edit] Introduction

KlipFolio was developed by Serence in 2001, originally to provide at-a-glance access to information that users have identified as being important to them.

In June of 2007 KlipFolio took top honours from Webuser in a product review [1] that included Google Desktop, Yahoo! Widgets, and Windows Sidebar. The CNET site Download.com also lists KlipFolio as its most downloaded RSS reader[2].

[edit] Features

KlipFolio features the following functionality (not a complete list):

KlipFolio appears as a floating deskbar, a sidebar, or a deskbar. The application installs with a variety of common Klips though many more are available for download. Klips are built and shared by Serence and individual contributors.

All Klips can be moved and reordered. Several options are also available for most Klips.

Another feature that comes with KlipFolio is alerts.

[edit] Klips

Main article: Klip

Klips are interactive mini-applications that can be placed anywhere on the user's desktop to show new email, weather, photos and other options. Other Klips include a clock, calendar, scratch pad, to do list and more.

Serence offers an SDK for people who wish to write Klips for KlipFolio. These Klips can increase the functionality of the program. An official Klipblog has been created to support Klip developers

[edit] Technical

KlipFolio includes a JavaScript based semantic markup language which creates relationships among disparate bits of data, helps to present these data bits in a consistent manner, and allows a web developer to create and modify Klips to his or her taste. Employing a semantic markup language also makes KlipFolio portable: appropriate context for the data it presents can be maintained on the desktop, on a mobile device, or even via an automated voice system.

The application is built using proprietary internal systems including an XML parser and HTTP stack along with tailor made image scaling and PNG decoding. These developments were all designed to fit within a core code package that is still less than 500 KB.

KlipFolio also includes CSS-based matching architecture to aid in the semantic markup of structured data based on HTML and XML.
