Kleroterion
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The kleroterion was a simple lottery device used by Athenians during the period of their democracy to randomly choose citizens for public posts. It consisted of a flat surface incised with many slots into which the citizens' tokens - pinakia - would be placed, as well as a tube that was to be filled with different-colored balls that, when cranked out, determined which slots would be chosen.
