Kjøtt was a Norwegian punk band hailing from Oslo. The group was active between 1979 and 1981. Over the course of their three-year existence, Kjøtt released two 7" EPs, one 12" EP, and one full-length LP in addition to contributing several tracks to various compilation records and cassettes. A retrospective compilation of the band's music was issued in 1989.

[edit] History

The band's first 7" was among Norway's first punk records. In quick succession, the band released several songs that became cult classics in their homeland including "Jeg vil bli som Jesus" ("I Want to be Like Jesus"), Nå vil jeg ikke leke med teitinger mer ("Now I Won't Play With Morons Anymore"), and "Elektrisk" ("Electric"). Up to this point in their career, Michael Krohn, the band's drummer, had been the group's primary songwriter. Eventually, however, the band's vocalist, Helge Gaarder, took over most of the songwriting. Gaarder's influence is most clearly seen on the band's second 7" and their lone LP, "Op." Although Krohn continued to share writing credits with Gaarder, the latter's preference for experimental music soon shaped the band's sound, which moved away from the speedier punk rhythms favored by the former.
