English pronunciation [KIV-ee-uck].

From my French Canadian point of view, it'd rather be KIV-ee-ook.

Heard back from Michael Kusugak, who proposed the name. NASA had given the pronunciation as "kee-VYOOK" in a press release, with the accent messed up (which happens surprisingly often). Michael said,

"You are right about the accents. Kiviuq is pronounced Ki' vi uq (kee' vee oq, the q is gutteral, pronounced in the back of the tongue)."

I'd imagine that for many English speakers, "KIV ee oke" might be an easier pronunciation. As for the [o] for 'u', Inuit has only three vowels, long & short 'a', 'i', 'u', generally pronounced more or less as their IPA values. However, "gutteral" (uvular) consonants like 'q' and 'r' strongly affect any adjacent vowels, making i and u closer to IPA [e] and [o]. --kwami 05:55, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)
