[edit] William in Eastbourne

Hi there, and welcome to the wonder that is Wikipedia.

I notice you have been editting the article on Eastbourne, and while your contributions are of course greatly appreciated, I note you have several times re-added a paragraph regarding William the Conqueror landing there. When you find someone is reverting or removing your work like this, it's usually best to try and find out why:

  • firstly, you can look in the page's edit history (click the 'history' tab at the top of each page) to see if there was a helpful edit summary
  • secondly, you can have a look on the article's attached talk page (click the 'discussion' tab); in this case, you will find a section at the end where MortimerCat has explained what is wrong with that paragraph. You are, of course, entitled to disagree, as long as you bear in mind the policies and guidelines that have already been agreed. If there wasn't already an explanation there, the best course would be to ask for one so that a minimum of time is wasted on misunderstandings.

Before I sign off, one thing I've noticed looking at your contributions is that you tend to have a rather more chatty style than is usual round here. While it's a good thing to stop things sounding too dry and boring (which I probably have a tendency towards), Wikipedia is intended as a reference work, and as such uses fairly formal language; particularly beware the exclamation mark - few encyclopedic facts really deserve one.

Anyway, I hope I haven't droned on so long that I've put you off, because your edits are appreciated; I just thought I'd point out how to make them even more appreciated. Happy editting! - IMSoP 21:45, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Spoof Wikipedia !!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a link to a spoof Wikipedia [1], but you will still need my permission to make entries there. MortimerCat 01:40, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] William the Conq.

I have come to your talk page as this discussion has become off topic. My precise role is just another Wiki editor like yourself. I do not claim to be any more knowledgable. I picked on the William the Conqueror fact because I have a serious interest in history, and the Norman invasion is something I have actively studied over the years. I used to live around Normans Bay whilst working in Battle so for a few years, I was making the same journey as Williams army!

I have no idea how many people read this stuff, or how many hits Eastbourne is getting.

My ambition is to get the Eastbourne article to Featured article status. I am hoping you will help because you have shown knowledge of the area. We need Eastbourne facts but we also need to know where these facts come from. The lack of citations was the main critism from the Project review.

I hope we hear more from you, its good to have a bit of humour (but only on the talk pages) MortimerCat 19:52, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

thanks again for your comments . As you say we'd be better off keeping our discussion to my talk page ! And thanks too for telling me about the spoof Wikipedia . As soon as I saw the word uncyclopedia I was hooked and you won't be hearing from me again ! No seriously going back to the bit about films and tvs the council does have a film liaison officer who might be worth contacting . I spoke to him when he was working on "Notes on a scandal" and he was telling me all the films / tc made in Eastbourne . Unfortunately I can remember neither his name or his title ! Was also very interested to hear you once lived at Norman's Bay . We looked at a house there (perhaps it was yours !) before we settled in Royal Parade opposite the fish market . Come to think of it I would have seen William the Conqueror sailing east past here . I could have followed him and found out where he landed ! See you K
