Kirensk

Kirensk (Russian: Киренск) is a town in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, located at the confluence of the Kirenga and Lena Rivers 710 km north of Irkutsk. Population: 13,712 (2002 Census); 16,137 (1989 Census).

It was founded in 1630 by the Cossacks as a winter settlement of Nikolsky pogost. It bore that name until 1665, when it was renamed Kirensky ostrog. Town status since 1775.

In the 19th century it served as a settlement to where a large number of political prisoners were forcibly resettled. Among notable political prisoners kept there was Józef Piłsudski.

It is served by Kirensk Airport.
