Kirby (tentative title) is a platforming video game developed by HAL Laboratory for Nintendo's Wii video game console. The game has yet to be officially unveiled for the Wii and details are sketchy. It is currently not announced for an American release[2][3], but is believed to be still on track for a 2008-release in Japan[4][5] and a release in Europe sometime in the future[1].

[edit] Gameplay
As shown in screenshots, levels within Kirby were rendered in 3D, but the gameplay was to remain a side-scroller, much like in Kirby 64. Kirby also utilized a new attack system, which allowed Kirby to ride on the backs of up to three other characters. Kirby was also able to receive abilities from partners or enemies, as in Kirby Super Star. Another return from Kirby Super Star - as well as Kirby & the Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad - was the multiple moves for a certain ability. Furthermore, Kirby was to support up to four-player multiplayer[6].
At least twenty-one powers have been seen in videos of the game[7]. These powers were Beam, Bomb, Broom, Cutter, Fighter, Fire, Hammer, Ice, Parasol, Stone, Sword, Tornado, Water (an ability that was only seen in the Kirby anime), and Wheel.
In addition, the Helper system from Kirby Super Star was to be reinstated with the ability to have up to three helpers.
[edit] History
Kirby was first announced E3 2005, and was then set for the release on the Nintendo GameCube. However, after its first announcement, little information was revealed about the game, and it soon appeared that the game was now set for release, if it was to be released at all, on Nintendo's Wii video game console, the successor to the Nintendo GameCube.
On May 26, 2006, IGN released an article stating the release of a "generically labeled Kirby game", based on information found "in a recent Japanese release list found on Nintendo's corporate site". Furthermore, on September 14, 2006, a game titled Hoshi no Kirby (星のカービィ), meaning "Kirby of the Stars", appeared on a list of upcoming Wii games set for release in Japan. The December 2006 issue of Nintendo Power removed Kirby from its list of GameCube releases, but did not place it on its list of Wii releases.
Matt Casamassina of IGN, posting on his blog, furthered the idea of a Wii release by stating that Kirby would indeed be released for the Wii in 2007[8]. Casamassina compared Kirby to Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, another game that had been originally announced as a GameCube title, but had eventually been released on the Wii. Finally, however, at E3 2007, although Kirby was not shown by Nintendo, it was confirmed to "have not been abandoned on the Wii" by Beth Llewelyn of Nintendo of America[9]. However, when asked about the GameCube version, she said "not to forget about Kirby" either[9].
In the December 2007 issue of the British publication, Official Nintendo Magazine, it was "supposedly" confirmed in the Ask Nintendo section that a Kirby game for Wii is currently not in development[3]. These reports have been proven wrong by recent announcements, although the game is only announced for a Japanese and European release for now[2] [3] [10][11][1].
It is believed the game might be officially unveiled in July 2008 at E3 alongside the rumoured Animal Crossing Wii, to name but a few other titles to be announced.[12]
