Kinoiki Kekaulike I was princess of Kauai being daughter of H.M. King George Kaumualii and H. M. Queen Ka'apuwai Kapua'a-Moku.
She was born in the early 18th century to King Kaumualii and his wife Ka'apuwai Kapua'amoku. Her mother was her father's stepdaughter and niece, daughter of Queen Kawalu, another wife of Kaumualii being his half=sister, by her first husband, Alii Palikua, Alii of Koloa. Her father descended from the Royal Family of Kauai through her mother Queen Kamakahelei and the Royal Family of Maui through her father Kaeokulani. Her mother was also granddaughter of Kamakahelei and Kaneoneo, the exiled king of Oahu who had been overthrown by the chiefs of Oahu and replaced by a Ewa chief Kahahana. Her brother was Prince Kealiiahonui, a member of the 15 seat counsel of Kamehameha III's House of Nobles and renowned last prince of Kauai.[1]
She married the Ali'i Nui of Hilo, Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole, son of Alii Elelule, by his wife, Alii Po'omaikelani, daughter of Alii Kanekoa, of Waimea.[2] His husband like her father was not a ruling chief. Flowing through her was three of the four main island kingdoms' blood, Maui, Kauai, and Oahu, when she married the High Chief Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole who was the great-great grandson of King Keawe-i-kekahi-ali'i-o-kamoku II of the Big Island.[3]
With her husband, she begot three daughters who were all members of the Royal Court of King David Kalakaua in 1883. His daughters were Esther Kapiolani Napelakapuokakai, the eldest name after Kuhio's aunt; Virginia Kapo'oloku Po'omaikelani, name after Kuhio's own mother; Victoria Kinoiki Kekaulike, name after Princess Kinoiki Kekaulike. Only Victoria had issues, she gave birth to three sons. There was David Kawananakoa, Edward Abel Keliiahonui and Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole. David, also had three children. Three seem to be recurring number in that family. She had three daughters; her daughter, Victoria, had three sons; her grandson, David Kawananakoa, had three children; her great-granddaughter, Abigail Helen Kapiolani Kawananakoa, had three children; and her great-great-granddaughter, Esther Kapiolani Kawananakoa Marchesa Marignoli, currently has three children.[4]
