Kingmambo (foaled February 19, 1990 in Kentucky) is an American thoroughbred stallion racehorse. He was sired by the leading stud, Mr. Prospector, who in turn was a son of Raise a Native, out of the 1999 United States Racing Hall of Fame mare Miesque, who in turn was a daughter of the great Nureyev.
Although born and bred in the U.S., Kingmambo raced primarily in England and France for owner Stavros Niarchos. Niarchos owned both a U.S. thoroughbred farm, where his mare Miesque was stationed, and a French operation, where he did most of his racing.
As a two year old, after winning a six furlong allowance race on an English track, Kingmambo placed second in the French Grade I Prix de la Salamandre, the Grade III Prix Thomas Bryon, and the Grade III Prix de Cabourg.
Then, at age three, ridden by the American, Cash Asmussen, and trained by Francois Boutin, he won the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, the St. James's Palace Stakes, and the Prix Djebel, beating Zafonic in a surprise upset.
[edit] Retirement
Kingmambo was retired to stud in 1994 and currently stands at Lane's End Farm.
His outstanding progeny include 1999 Belmont Stakes winner Lemon Drop Kid and 2008 2,000 Guineas winner Henrythenavigator, along with multi graded stakes race winners King Kamehameha, American Boss, Star King Man, Tawqeet, King Cugat, Mambo Twist, El Condor Pasa, Divine Proportions, and Voodoo Dancer.
