Kingmaker Novices' Chase
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kingmaker Novices' Chase is a Grade 2 National Hunt chase in the United Kingdom for five-year-old and above novices. It is run over a distance of 2 miles (3,219 m) at Warwick Racecourse in February. There are twelve fences to be jumped in the race.
It was first run in 1991 in May over a distance of 2 miles 4 furlongs 110 yards (4,124 m). From 1996 it was run in February over 2 miles, which was increased to 2 miles 110 yards (3,319 m) in 2000. The race was abandoned at Warwick in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and transferred on each occasion to Wincanton, where it was run over 2 miles with thirteen fences to jump. The distance was kept when it returned to Warwick in 2008.
The race title comes from the nickname of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, who was known as "Warwick the Kingmaker" during the Wars of the Roses.
