Kingdom grand prix (Shippu Mahou Daisakusen Kingdom Grand Prix) is a vertical scrolling shoot-em-up/racing hybrid game created for the Arcades by Eighting/Raizing, it was later ported to the Sega Saturn system. It is the second in the "Mahou Daisakusen Series" but was the first in the series to include the bizarre but original feature of being a shooter/racing hybrid.

[edit] Story
For decades the kingdom has been ravaged by war. Too many innocents have suffered and legions good men have lost their lives in battle. The king had an idea to stop the war; he would hold a big race that would encompass every part of the kingdom. He called this race the Gale Magic Big Strategy Kingdom Grand Prix. Everyone from each part of the kingdom was invited to participate. The wars ceased and the people began looking forward to this competition every year.
[edit] Gameplay
Consists of a vertically scrolling shooter where you have to race against seven contestants whilst shooting enemies, you have the choice of either firing (when the button is pressed) or boosting (when the button is held) as well as this your general speed will increase or decrease depending on your position on the screen (the higher up your craft is the faster you will go), your max speed will however decrease eveytime you lose a life and everytime you proceed to the next stage. you also have a button to fire off a limited amount of screen filling bombs which, as well as destroying most of the enemies on screen, are also one of the only ways you can slow down your fellow racers. Much of the difficulty in the game lies in knowing when it's the best time to boost.
[edit] Power-ups
There are four power-ups in Kingdom Grand Prix
P - increases the power of your main forward firing gun
B - gives you an extra bomb
H - gives you extra homing bullets
F - gives you extra forward shots
All the power-ups have a cumulative effect on overall power except the bomb which simply increases the amount of times you can use it, however, where the H and F power-ups are concerned, you may only have one at a time, if you collect an F power-up when you already have an H power-up it will replace it.
[edit] Levels
The game has a total of twelve stages in a branching path configuration, at the end of each stage a choice between two different stages will appear, the last stage is a three way choice.
[edit] Shoot-em-up mode
Due to the popularity of more traditional styles of shoot-em-up, a shooting only mode was included in the saturn port, in this mode all the other races are removed and the player is left to play the game at their own pace. The code to enable this mode is left, right, left, right, up, down, up, down and start, which must be input in the options menu with the cursor over "sound mode"
