King Mulu was the legendary owner of the Bana cave in the Nanman region (Yunnan), during the Three Kingdoms period (184-263 CE).
Luo Guanzhong, the author of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, invented King Mulu in order to flesh-out the story of Zhuge Liang's Southern Campaign. Mulu was known as a very intimidating person, able to use magic to summon rainstorms, along with the ability to control animals in battle against Shu. Mulu ran into battle atop an elephant. When the wits of Zhuge Liang proved greater than his own, he was ultimately killed.
